Youth Conservation Corps

The Friends Youth Conservation Corps is a team of 6-8 area high-school and college aged individuals that are hired to provide the physical labor for typical storm water filtering, slowing, and diversion projects.

The YCC works on LakeSmart Start! projects such as these if they do not require large machinery, engineering services, or a full permit from the Maine DEP.

The YCC program typically runs for 5 weeks in July and August, 3 days per week (Wednesday - Friday).

Examples of projects include: armoring of shoreline with angular rock to reduce erosion caused by wave action, planting of vegetative buffer to slow and filter sheet flow during heavy rains, spreading erosion control mulch over areas of bare soil, etc.
